Oh my gosh, that fantasy thing works! On the way to pick Noah up from school, Seth is whining on and on about the orange I promised him for snack later. After a couple of snarky (and ineffectual) comments about the whining, inspiration strikes: “If I had an orange in my pocket, I’d give it to you.” He says ok and that’s the last of the whining. Magic!

@Steph: Magic Treehouse is well loved in this abode. Have you checked out the Study Guides? Books on “important” topics, like Knights, Space, and Pirates.

@Beth: My almost-4 year old enjoys reading the chapter books with Big Brother. He also enjoys all things Richard Scarry, and anything that has to do with poop. I think it’s more the build-up than anything (“Guess what’s at the library?…. Another Andrew Lost!!!! – oh, the giggles of glee ).

@Margaret: Thank you for the kind words! I’m sure we’ve passed each other at Freddies; it is our home away from home. Because if you can’t get it at Freddies, do you really need it?

If anyone else has suggestions of decent boy books, I’d love the recommendations! More will come as I find them, and can find a moment to ignore my children/sleep to blog.

Love your blog. So glad to see you back at it. Somehow found it years ago…linked with something about why computer geeks make the best dads. Lived in the “berg” until 2 years ago…probably passed you at Freddie’s someday without even knowing it. Anyway, thanks for the interesting, “relatable” reads.

That’s what I really want to say. Just, yes.

Sadly, my verbosity will not let me. Let’s see if I can keep this short.

My friend who had a “no guns” rule in her house tells the story of raising 3 boys. She caught them at lunch shooting each other with their PB&J sandwiches, which they’d chewed into the shape of, yep, guns. I like that story. It makes me smile. (FYI, she maintained her rule.)

My family = military. Greg’s family = pacifists. Our house = War & Peace.

I feel the wonder.

If you have any read-aloud chapter book suggestions (full of action, heroism, and, yes, poop is fine, too) for my 4-year-old boy children, I’d love some! If any you suggested are OK for my smarty-pants boys, I’ll do those. Do tell!

Sweet! I love book recommendations for Henry. We’ve been doing some chapter books with him, too. I LOVE IT! The hardest part is knowing what awesome books are to come…just having to wait for him to be a little older first. Another good series that we’ve been doing with Henry are the Magic Treehouse series. Super, super cute and full of adventures.
